Have you perfected your elevator pitch? A good elevator pitch enables you to succinctly and effectively describe who you are, what you do, and what you are looking for.
Elevator Pitch Dos:
- Your elevator pitch should be a conversation starter. Make it interesting. How can you draw the person’s attention?
- Think about what you are trying to accomplish. What point are you trying to communicate? What do you want to highlight about yourself? Is there a great achievement you can mention?
- You should have different versions of your elevator pitch. Customize your pitch according to who you speak with, your goal, and how long you have.
- Include an ASK. Make it clear how they can help you. The “ask” is not…”Can you get me a job?” It is also not asking for money or a favor…. The ask is done in a very soft, almost subliminal way, so that the person you are talking to may recall the conversation with you if they run into an opportunity that may be a good fit for you.
- Practice your pitch but keep it conversational.

Elevator Pitch Don’ts:
- Do not be boring. Build a relationship. Make this a conversation starter.
- Don’t try to speak longer than you have. Keep it short and to the point
- Don’t just recite your written pitch, flow with the conversation
- Don’t miss out on opportunities of meeting new people by not having a good pitch ready.
