The key to a successful negotiation is first believing in yourself, and second, being well prepared. If you are negotiating your future wage, being well prepared means:
Being able to present clear evidence and concrete examples from your past that will demonstrate your ability to succeed in the role
Identify the employer’s needs/challenges and highlight your experience managing those same issues. Establish why you are the best fit for this role.
This will also help you build your confidence. Sometimes, to understand your worth, it helps to stare at the facts that show your relevant experience and success.
Research what you are worth. Ask for a specific amount
Back up the dollar amount you are requesting with research into pay standards. Use Glassdoor to check comparables, talk to friends, make some calls. Get to that specific dollar mount that you are worth.
According to a new study conducted by LeanIn.Org and McKinsey & Co., asking for a specific amount in a salary negotiation is key. The study found that women who did not ask for a specific amount received 32% less on average than ones who did.
Get ready for your next negotiation by:
- Demonstrating what you can do
- Supporting it with proven experience
- Quoting the market value of what these jobs are worth
