Has there been a silver lining for you during this pandemic?
Pause for a moment.
Make a conscious choice to shift your attention to anything positive that has happened during this time.
When I took the time to think about this I was actually surprised by the amount of positive things that came up for me.
In the beginning of the pandemic I noticed that we were going to sleep late, we were watching Netflix into the night. Then, we would start looking at the numbers of infected people before going to sleep. We were still getting up at the same time in the morning. I noticed that the lack of sleep was really affecting me. I was much less productive. I decided to go to bed by 10:30, ok around 10:30pm. Yes we are night people, that is early for us. I stop whatever we are watching, it can easily be resumed the next day. I no longer check the news in bed.
Apart from the new sleeping routine, we have also started a garden I am surprisingly enjoying. Dependent on food deliveries, we have gotten into a food scarcity mode, and we are no longer throwing food out. This has been one of my husband’s pet peeves, and he is thrilled by this change.
It was good to take a pause and think about the positive.
I asked some of my clients this question. They appreciated taking a moment to think about it, appreciate the positive, and think about what they would like to make sure they embrace going forward.
One, a mother of 2, 2 working parents, who are struggling to both work full time and take care of their kids without childcare, said she’d received a present. Their youngest child is 1 and while awake must be supervised. She realized that she received the gift of time with her children, much more time than she had working full time in the office. She also realized that if she did not have her youngest son, who needed watching over, she would have spent less time with her older daughter, who is more independent and does not need constant supervision. She is embracing this additional time she has with her children and thinking about how to continue that in the future.
An executive I’m coaching is thankful to not be travelling. He’s been able to create new habits around time management and is planning to continue with them going forward.
Others are telling me about the new cooking skills they have developed, trying new recipes. Many are taking the time to regularly check in on their employees and how they are feeling, connecting with them on a much deeper level, or re-connecting with people around the globe they have not been in touch with for a while.
