There is research that setting new goals around dates that stand out – a new year, a holiday, a birthday or even just the start of a new week, is helpful in achieving them.
These dates help people mentally separate their past imperfections and failures with their positive image of their current and future self.
It is the time to start becoming who you want to be.
September, the end of the summer, for many the start of a new school year, Monday, Labor Day, which also happens to coincide with the Jewish New year, is a perfect time to reflect and set some new goals for the weeks, months or year to come.
So who do you want to be?
What would you like to achieve?
What goals will you start working on this week?
Tips for success:
• Start with one thing. It is easier to focus on one change at a time.
• Be specific. I will exercise more is too broad. Detail what it means. What will you do? When? How long etc.
• Use positive language to state what you will do rather than what you will not. For example, change “I will not avoid difficult conversations” to “I will engage in providing constructive feedback to my team on a regular basis” (defining what regular basis will mean can be helpful too).
• Celebrate wins along the way, big and small.
• Find an accountability partner that will help you stick with it.
So what steps will you start taking this week to become who you want to be personally? Professionally?
You can do it!
